305 columns of various sizes support the stripped roof of skylights, yet their white color keeps the focus on the space and the view, not the structure.  The columns, although seemingly random, as specifically placed to create the sensation of zoned spaces, but their nonrestrictive quality provides a flexible layout to suit the changing needs of students. -- ArchDaily

Piling up a ring at the periphery of the building. It consists of metal posts of square section, arranged every 3 meters, assisted by a random series of posts. These form the solid support but also structural elements of the base. They can release the public space at the court, thus favoring open spaces for the public. Pilings create an interface between the public and most private offices spaces between the base and the foundation. This reveals the great emptiness of the open court, from the rising of the base space. -- ArchDaily

Kontum Indochine Café, Kontum, Vietnam, 2013 designed by Vo Trong Nghia Architects
The roof of the main building is supported by a pure bamboo structure composed of 15 inverse-cone-shaped units. The form of these columns was inspired by a traditional Vietnamese basket for fishing which gradually narrows from the top toward the base. This open structure maximizes the wind flow into the building during the summer, while resisting harsh storms during the windy season. -- ArchDaily

House 14-15, Weissenhofsiedlung, Stuttgart, Germany 1927 designed by Le Corbusier
Mies van der Rohe had originally intended the twin house 14-15 as a single-family house costing RM 23,100, with five rooms, a kitchen, a bathroom and a maid's room. Le Corbusier and Jeanneret's initial plan adhered to this concept. In the plans, houses 13 and 14-15 were linked, which subsequently proved impracticable as the architects had wrongly estimated the ground level of the two houses.
Later, Le Corbusier redesigned the house, creating two house halves that would represent a novel, convertible house supplementing the single-family house. For the exhibition, one half was to be furnished and fitted for day use, the other for night use.
Characteristic features of the twin house are the continuous windows, the steel columns on the ground floor, and the two staircases standing out as independent cubes on the western side of the house.
The house is remarkably like a railway carriage - an impression accentuated by the convertible living and sleeping area, and the narrow corridor interconnecting the rooms. -- official web site

New Civil Guard Barracks House in Oropesa del Mar, Oropesa del Mar, Spain, 2011 designed by espegel-fisac arquitectos
The building is organized in two pieces, shaping an L that defines the access square opened to Plana Avenue, being the natural way to the roads that are approaching from the urban center. To the high floors apartments, faced to the south and the sea, the access is through the exterior communication core that is the joint of the two pieces located in the corridor opened to the square. Above the housing line, the apartment block is elevated upright by pilotis. Thereby, an external elevated public space is generated for recreation and leisure areas of the residents. -- ArchDaily

This three tower-houses have a particular structure, raising from a small concrete foundation as you can see on the construction pictures. The V Houses are made out of steel, plywood and red corrugated iron roofs.  -- ArchDaily

One of the principal premises was not to interfere directly the land, as part of the philosophy of the project is to respect nature in every possible way. The availability of steel by our client lead to the design of the clean structure with this material, which elevates the skeleton of the room, named EcoLoft, to avoid contact with the soil. Nicknamed the ‘three-pointed star’, the entire edifice stands on seventy-two columns of concrete piling. It is world famous, not only because it is the home of a well-known organization but also because of its outstanding architectural qualities. -- official web site

Strong sculptural forms exhibit the building's Expressionist architectural style. Expressionism is characterized by curving rooflines and walls, convex or concave surfaces, and arched or vaulted spaces. The massive 10-story building dominates its site in the shape of a curvilinear "X," creating two long, concave elevations and two shorter ones at the ends. This modular mass is dramatically perched on exposed concrete pilotis (piers) at the ground level in robust pairs that taper together to a narrow base. At this level, granite-sheathed concrete walls are recessed to create a sheltered loggia framed by the colonnade of paired pilotis. -- official web site

The office spans the current factory complex. Together with the existing historic building, it is the crowning glory of a multitude of industrial forms, buildings and materials. The southern wing of the building is placed on two-storey high ‘V’ shaped legs. Through this semi-covered public area the building and the city contacts each other, the internal garden and facades are visible for the external observers, too. The principle building is constructed using a ‘superstructure’ consisting of a canopy and a roof. The roof is carried by columns made from white concrete. These columns are positioned in a crisscross formation. The configuration of the building’s structural system is based on mixed porticoes made of steel and concrete. The porticoes on the north side are formed by reinforced concrete screens, which work as deep beams, supported on HEM metallic pillars in a V shape. A new pedestrian entry for students and families occurs along a ramp (an over-scaled, required handicap ramp) that rises up to the middle of the site and arrives in a large Urban Porch. This space will become a new nexus for the school, functioning in a variety of different ways including; accommodating an outdoor lunchroom, entry to the school, entry to the library, a second story balcony accessed from the new art room and existing classrooms above. The balcony will also provide become a pulpit / lectern for the larger religious occasions such as Easter.  The Urban Porch provides a new identity for the school and parish within the City. -- ArchDaily

The new roof structure creates a consistent and smooth transition between the exterior and the interior of the building. It connects the different functional areas in one fluid space and creates an open and evocative atmosphere. The three-dimensional pattern was generated in a simulation of fluids based on particle flows. Liquids have three essential parameters: viscosity, density and surface tension. The interactions between these three physical properties have been tested on the computer in a series of variations to generate a pattern with a big amount of holes and a high level of coherence. -- ArchDaily

The building is conceived as a dense, compact and hermetic solid, perforated by six circular courtyards that trap the natural light and generate reading areas open to the sky.
The diverse areas into this solid are developed in four levels, with very different use on each one. Nonetheless there is a strong visual connection between all of them through the building sections. For construction, in trying to lessen the impact on the ground, we chose a metal structure fabricated in a workshop and transported to the site in large pieces that could be assembled on 3 metal, V-shaped pillars.  An existing stone terrace supports the back part of the structure. This home looks as though suspended or in flight due to the dry construction materials used. -- ArchDaily

The new school complex combines three units: A canteen, a science section and a roofed break area. The building was erected on the foundation of an old non-rehabilitable building thus covering the complete surface of the original former structure. Areas not being accommodated are added to the roofed break room. The spacious perron interlocks the latter with the adjacent schoolyard. The columns of the roof overhang negate their structural  function. Rather resembling playground equipment they enhance the connection of both areas turning it into an attractive, connected space for breaks. -- ArchDaily

The pavement, made out of stained stamped concrete, solves the contact between the house and the ground. Most of Le Corbusier's 'five points of architecture' from the 1920s and the Villa Savoye are alive and well in the Unité: the strong pilotis creating circulation space beneath, the free facades now loud with a carefully orchestrated pattern of single- and double-height balconies generated from fifteen different types of apartment, and the roof terrace reclaiming the lost land beneath the building for recreation.  -- galinsky

Inevitably suggesting Le Corbusier influences, the museum is supported on pillars, like Le Corbusier’s patented piloti. Furthermore, the building is articulated with reinforced concrete, a natural convention of Corbu. The geometrical structure of the three above ground floors is established in accordance with a sequential logic that relates them in height; it assigns a structure of ‘L’ to the ground floor, which finds its counterpoint in the reverse scheme, also in the shape of an ‘L’, which corresponds to the highest storey.
